C Karma excels in turf debut in Natalma Stakes

.

C Karma showed her versatility on Sunday as she surged to a neck victory in her turf debut in the $157,852 Natalma Stakes (Can-G3) for two-year-old fillies at Woodbine.

Pamela Edel’s homebred Exchange Rate filly accelerated in the stretch and held off late-closing Freyga as she completed one mile in 1:40.74 on turf rated as soft.

The win also ensured C Karma of a return engagement on the grass. C Karma earned a starting spot in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on October 24 at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park with the win. The Natalma is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series.

“I always thought she was a high-quality filly,” trainer Greg de Gannes said. “She’s a homebred. There’s nothing more pleasing [for an owner] then having a homebred jump up and do this.”

Jockey Jono Jones rated C Karma fourth through the first half-mile of the race as Koonunga Hill pressed pacesetter Laragh through steady fractions of :23.30 and :47.34.

C Karma, the 4.85-to-1 second choice in the ten-horse field, moved up to third at the quarter pole, within two lengths of Laragh, and swept into the stretch from five wide.

Jones asked C Karma for more as Laragh faded from first in early stretch, while Freyga launched an all-out rally to surge into contention.

C Karma overtook Koonunga Hill inside the final furlong and had just enough left in reserve to hold off 45.60-to-1 longshot Freyga for the victory.
